The scholarship was established by the Class of 1985 to honor Dr. McCarthy who served as President of Framingham State College from 1961 until his retirement in 1985. During his long and productive presidency, a major building program took place on campus. Academic offerings increased from two to twenty-one undergraduate areas of study. The Division of Continuing Education was also established offering master's degrees and the External Degree Program. This award is granted to an individual who has been active in co-curricular activities within the University community.
